They do have the Kindle App for PCs, iPhone/iPod touch and Blackberry. So they see the value of selling their books on multiple machines.

But at the same time, they do make money selling Kindles so they don't want people reading their books on say a Sony reader.

So it will stay locked unless they decide to abandon hardware, which they probably won't. Even if they can compete without hardware, no point in giving it up if it's making some profit for them.
