If this is true (i.e. that Amazon doesn't need hardware to compete, not that they agree!), why are Amazon locking their content to the Kindle?

If they had an auto-convert to ePub, with application of, say, Adobe DRM on top to replace their DRM, they could sell to a market that was perhaps half as large again as their current Kindle user base.

Technically, this is easy, so I can't understand why they're not doing it if their profits are in the content, not the hardware.
