A wrong time setting doesn't say anything about the date setting. But the date is the thing that matters. Depeding on the production center, in which your nook was assembled, it is shipped with a nearly current date setting or a setting in the year 2000. With the latter one, it's impossible to register the nook.
The current 1.2 firmware uses ntp over wifi, if available, to set the clock. The previous versions only use the cellular phone network. If you got a nook with absolutely wrong date setting and don't have ATT access, the only way to register with an old firmware, is to set the date using the ADB shell on a rooted nook.
