I think the question is, not what we read, as you say, we can learn something even from the cereal box. the question is about if we can pick out what we are reading, if we can understand and critic it. It's not bad reading Da Vinci's code, but it's a fiction, and we can not forget it. And the same happens to many books. As your grandmother said, reading is good. Bad is that people can't really understand the read, and this happens too with tv and other media.
