This is more or less what we do -- after 20 years of marriage, it seemed like a good way to avoid friction. We get by on my paycheck, which is deposited into our joint account, from which my husband pays the bills. But a small amount gets automatically transferred to a second account, which I can spend on whatever I want. Also, if I take extra work (e.g. the Chinese language games book that's supposed to be available from chinasprout.com "any day now"), any proceeds from that go to my account.
But right now I'm all tapped out anyway, so I couldn't have bought a Reader even if I'd seen the notice in time. I'd have liked to get one for my daughter, the Manga Maniac, but honestly I've already spent all I should on her birthday.

All the rest of my money is currently tied up in printing an original card game (
