I'm looking for a book or perhaps it was a short story that was set on a south Pacific island at the start of WW II. The main character that i remember was a Catholic missionary who had a small but wonderful garden there, which he had built up over many years of bringing soil from other islands in baskets. Anyway, the plot was about the Japanese soldiers arriving at the island, but I can't remember what happens and I'd like to reread it. Does this ring any bells out there?
