I gained a Microsoft certification a few years ago. I can't say it has directly brought me any new work (I'm an independent software developer), but it's a definite plus on my c.v. And I'm sure the logo on my website does no harm, nor does the the framed certificate in my office.

As others have said, it depends in what field you are seeking to be certified. But for the most part, I'd say go for it. It could well help your career. If nothing else, it will improve your self-esteem.
