Yes, particle board was invented in the ealy thirties because there wasn't enough decent wood to make plywood, and all of it went to make airplanes. So someone in western Europe had the brilliant idea of adding glue to planer shavings. There it was; particle board. It meant that furniture could be built quicker with resources that were burned off before. Even today it's a most ecological solution.
