It is the authors who own the copyright, not the Embiid people, so what they want or mind is of no consequence.

It is what the authors (or their original publishers) want which matters, so contact the authors and explain what has happened and see if they will be willing to send you at no charge a version that can work on your Sony Reader. If the author says it's out of his/her control, contact the publisher.

Some may be helpful, some may just say "So what - it's not our problem, buy the version for your Sony! If you had bought a paper book and it became unreadable because you dropped it in a lake or lost it or it fell in a fire or was stolen, we'd have no responsibility to replace it. Why would this be different?"
