Many times a library will only have one license for a particular ebook. If that ebook is popular and lots of people want to read it there will be a waiting line to check out that title. If I'm next in line and the person who has the ebook wants to extend his loan period for an extra 14 or 21 days I would not be happy and that means I, and everyone else in line behind me, would have to wait.
When checking out ebooks, I will typically make sure my download works properly on my Reader, then return the title to the library so the next person who wants to download it can do so right away. As long as I don't connect my Reader to ADE it doesn't know I've returned the book and I have the ebook for the full 14 or 21 days.

Valid point about being considerate of others.

I always (manually) return my book immediately after I'm finished reading, regardless of how much checkout time remains. And you're right, when I do so, the book remains on my Reader.
