I would love to see what all it can do as well but the number you quote is based on flawed counting. The empty (except for OS) iPhone images show ~7.2gigabytes...but the 8 GB drive only has ~7.5 available for storage in the first place. It's the old 1,000,000,000 bytes=1GB marketing bit that all drive makers exploit.
300MB is still quite large for anything that would be considered a phone though. I just hope the extra goes to things that are used on a daily basis.
