Apple and Steve Jobs have known that DRM doesn't work since before the launch of the iTunes Music Store. They were forced to implement it by the record labels.

I haven't seen any statement yet as to what DRM (if any) is going to be used on ebooks for the iPad. Hopefully he's been more persuasive with the book publishers than he was with the record labels. He does, after all, have the record labels' experience to point to.
But my guess if that Apple will again be forced to implement a DRM scheme. If we're lucky it will go away after five years or so, like the iTunes music DRM scheme did.
