Quite often we heard how demand for e-books is on the rise (this coming usually from e-book vendors). But what good is an e-book nowadays? A group of students launched the
SuperBook project, funded by various big names including Microsoft and Wiley, to find out the truth. From the official
project description:
Quote:
The broad aim of the study is to create a live research laboratory at UCL which puts e-books through their paces, under the microscope, and in a real-life setting. From this ‘laboratory’, academics, publishers, users and librarians can learn and exchange information and they can also contribute ideas to be tested. Basically what we shall do is to expose the UCL academic user communities (students, researchers and academic staff) to a significant and relevant population of e-books (more than 3000) and then observe and measure what happens. Certain subject groups will be targeted and certain interventions will be made to evaluate the impact on usage/satisfaction etc and whether, as a result, they behave differently from the general population at large.
