As valid as other peoples explanations are above, these are my reasons for multiple devices:-

1/ Content - not all the books I want to read are available in the formats my device(s) handles and sometimes I just want to read - don't want to muck about format-shifting and 'liberating'.

2/ Display - e-ink for well-lit rooms, outdoors, holidays, etc... and back-lit for dimmed interiors/bedtime reading.

3/ Size - pocketable or not.
