It is sufficient if you get the file ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Digital Editions/activation.dat from Time Machine. You don't have to install the 1.7.1 application. Be careful not to overwrite the one that belongs to 1.7.2: Make a copy first, move it to a safe place, or tell Time Machine to keep both. After running the key extractor you can put the saved file back.
