Diamonds are only $valuable because of conditions of artificial scarcity and advertising that has made the general public believe they are worth more than life itself. There are other gems (emeralds, rubies) that are more uncommon, yet don't command the same $value. An artificial diamond can be better than a "natural one" and more suitable for all purposes - but you're a cheap-ass if you get one for your intended wife!
