I read about 'em once, in a Michael Crichton novel... apparently, when they are done properly, no one physically does them, and no one knows about 'em, but some geek always manages to point the protagonist to 'em in the nick of time...
They also tend to create mirror-images of people when transporter malfunctions occur.
