For free e-books, check out the 15,000 that are posted here on MobileRead. Click on the link below and then click on full list to easily search for a specific title. Many of the books posted here are well formatted. The Calibre ebook management program will convert them to whatever format you prefer.

The Sony store routinely has about 25 free contemporary books available for download.

One point with the Sony reader though. You should expect to spend $50.00 for the things that don't come in the Sony box - case, wall charger, ear buds, and currently a book lamp are included with the PEz, but not the Sony.
