1) Yep you can use your SD card reader on your computer. Just be aware, sometimes the new files don't get picked up straight away when you plug the SD card back into the PP (you may need to turn it off/on for it to pick them up).

2) After the firmware upgrade you can delete it quite happily as the firmware has been copied to the device. I forget who it was but on another thread it was suggested that you keep and archive of all the firmwares you install in the event you do an upgrade and don't like it and want to go back.
