Hi Lene,
I did do research. I was planning to switch from the Sonys to the Kindle. The Sony still commands pretty good prices on ebay so I thought I'd be able to sell the 505 and give the 500 to a friend (after having it updated to accept epub).

I think everything changed when Apple announced the iPad and their deal with the publishers. At that point my belief that Amazon would be able to maintain the prices it was currently offering disappeared. I think the release of the iPad has given the publishers a tremendous boost in their bargaining strength with Amazon.

Having the whispernet was a major deciding factor in getting the Kindle but outside the USA that is only useful for books purchased from Amazon (because of the restriction on use of the Kindles internet browser internationally). If Amazon's books increase in cost as I feel the newly empowered publishers will demand then I will be forced to shop around more for books, which cannot be wirelessly delivered, losing the selling point of the Kindle.

I am extremely grateful to everyone who has commented on this thread and helped me sort out my thoughts. I don't want to appear negative toward the kindle, I think it's a great device, just not right for me at the moment as the replacement for the Sony 505 that I thought it would be.
