It's one of the differences touted with eInk technology. You don't use a laptop in direct sunlight because you can't. With eInk, you are supposed to be able to (if you want to).

I just find it interesting that none of the device manufacturers, display manufacturers, or patent holders of eInk have given any public information about this.
