I may be totally wrong here but I think it might be something to do with the shortcut in the start icons are at the bottom left of the screen.

The number next to the heart showed 6.36 but I was getting the 'Failed to read metadata' error. I figured what the hey and deleted the Calbre folders from both the program files and the start menu files.

Wen I clicked on the the shortcut in the start icons are at the bottom left of the screen, it said it couldn't find the file.

I opened calbre using teh .exe in the calibre2 folder and I can add the troublesome book.
Hooray!

Dunno if this helps anyone else?
