Take a look at Ad Blocking Filterset P. It's a set of CSS statements used in Ad Block. Essentially, it defines a large number of ad servers and simply doesn't render content served by them. I use it in FF
instead of Ad Block. It does a sufficient job of straining out ads, and doesn't impose the overhead of actively scanning every page with JavaScript to look for ads to block.
