The best support I ever saw was for a Palm OS file manager called FileZ. I emailed the author with an issue. Within a few hours, I had a patched version to test and report on whether it solved the problem. (It did.) FileZ is free and open source, and the author does other things for a living. I'd like to get support like that on stuff I've paid for...
