It is an LCD screen with an LED back-light. The LCD screen is an in-plane switching version which results in better colour reproduction and wider viewing angles. Because the back-lighting is LED and not fluorescent it should be easier on the eyes for those of us bothered by such things. That being said, I have no desire to replace a dedicated reader with the ipad.
