Yes, it understands OPDS files; and you're absolutely right. If the program you have in mind (maybe calibre2opds?) dumps an appropriately linked set of catalog files onto the Nook, it should allow local browsing along the multiple hierarchies, by navigating the catalogs rather than the folders. That's a nifty, crafty idea, thank you for the suggestion!
