I definitely agree with the getting paid part, but it's a big toss-up. If you can't sell the product because people would rather trust something that has gone through the terrible scrutinizing hell of the publishing world, then the best thing to do is to maybe give it away.
Of course, only 10% of downloads actually read is kind of a downer.
