Add-ons while reading a document
To my mind there are two kinds of apps that might be viable in the Kindle environment. It's not clear from the Kindle development Kit announcements whether either or both of these will be supported/possible. I speak on the one hand, of standalone apps -- we have some recommendations here for these kinds of apps (mostly games), and on the other hand apps that function in an add-on capacity to basic e-book reading functionality not unlike add-ons that we find in the Firefox browser.
I'm not much for games -- so I have little interest in having these kinds of apps on my Kindle DX. On the other hand, a standalone app allowing me to provide my own screensavers -- actually a standalone configuration app allowing me to specify custom screensavers, timeout values, fonts, and other configuration settings which right now are provided by hacks -- would be high on my list.
In the add-on category I would like to see a document search add-on that allowed a search from a highlighted word (or words) in the document backwards or forwards from the point of the highlight. I would also like this search add-on to add additional flexibility in the specification of search terms -- perhaps all the way up to include regular expressions. Another add-on that I would like to see is some kind of synchronization capability (I know others in this thread have requested that we not have such a facility). I would (at a minimum) like the capability to automatically sync all my non-Amazon archive documents onto a PC (preferably in the "My Kindle Content" folder; also it would be desirable to have some kind of sync capability for all documents (both amazon and non-amazon) to a storage location on the Internet -- preferably a capability which would allow one to specify which one of several possible Internet storage facilities could be used.
As someone else in this thread has remarked I would also find it desirable to be able to create a database of all of my books: both Kindle resident, and physical books. There are a couple of facilities on the Internet that deal with physical books, but none (to my knowledge) that deal with Kindle books. One problem here is that (at least on Amazon) there are no ISBN numbers for Kindle books. Perhaps this is something beyond the Amazon environment; perhaps the industry needs to agree on ISBN numbers for e-books -- I don't know. But I would like to be able to maintain a database of all my books: both physical and electronic indexed (at a minimum) by ISBN number. Perhaps an app could be created that works with the Amazon my media library website -- again I don't know -- just a recommendation.
