made used of the verilux last night. Although I was actually too tired to read, the lighting is good. The difference between low and high is minor. I actually find it a bit too bright, even on the "lowest intensity", so I had to dim it by turning the lightcathode so only 50% light is flowed out.
Contrast is very good too. The pages are almost white.

The weight is a problem though. After holding the reader normally (with my thumb on the round silvery button) will be tiring.
