I think the types of music that people like ranges far beyond what is considered currently popular. Although I like a lot of older mainstream music, I also like a number of songs that are unusual or out of the mainstream.
For example, one of my favorite songs is "If I Can Just Get Through The Night" by Sissy Spacek (yes, the actress). Although it didn't chart on the Billboard charts, it has remained one of my favorite songs to this day.
Gilbert O'Sullivan, Prozzäk, Kermit The Frog, Benny Hill, Leslie Pearl, Barry Manilow and Lily Tomlin (in a duet together), The Mountain Goats, Nanci Griffith, Paul Giamatti (the actor), Sherry Lynn, Everything But The Girl, and Valdy are all artists/groups that have released songs that are my favorites, yet few of them would fall into the musical mainstream.
One of the best things about the digital revolution in music is that people can now discover interesting music, both new and old. They are less restricted to just what is on the radio or television. Most of the above artists I happened to stumble upon in ways other than regular radio.
