The cradle actually is not needed. You can get access to all the plugs you need at the bottom of the Reader. What Sony should have done in the first place is bundle the cradle with the reader. It's about $50 US to buy one separately. Not worth the cost. If Sony is still selling the Reader for $350, then you'd be best buying it from someplace selling it for $299 and forgoing the cradle.
