Just from what you have said, I would say hold off until you have checked out enough alternatives to be sure you get the one you want. Nothing worse than buyer's remorse before you even get it.
All of the top tier devices are good enough that most purchasers will be very happy with their device, and that includes the Nook.
Expect the EBook stores to improve a lot in the next year. They lose too many sales using the closed model.
For now keep in mind, with the Nook, you are tying yourself to Barnes and Nobel, just like with the Kindle you are attached to Amazon.
