There must another thing went wrong.
The date command is only used to set system time, which means kernel time, not the hardware RTC. When you reboot the system, the system time is resetted to RTC. The only way to set the RTC ist the hwclock command. Therefore it's impossible to run into any problems, when only using the date command.
