Both. Or possibly neither. The current situation is that while there
are newer firmware versions than 18040, they have
no new functionality apart from different date format, and thus are considered safe for replacement with the "most popular" 18040.

You will get an american date format in "books by date" instead of your british/german/whatever.

The font files will remain the same (so once you modify them as necessary, back them up!), but you will need to modify this hypothetical future firmware with them again.
