Well I'm pretty sure I was around for the birth of Webscriptions, although my first month wasn't until 2002. What I remember the most is the usenet (boy do I feel old mentioning that
) flamewar on rec.arts.sf.written that helped give birth to the Baen Free Library.
I'm so old I remember the Rockoids flamewar on rec.arts.sf.composition. And that started in 1999.
