Welcome to the club
My PB had the current firmware on when I got it so maybe yours has too but even so I would just get used to using it first before you attempt anything like that.
The battery is located at the back of the device under the pocketbook logo - if you look at my blog (see my sig) I have a post on there about how to reset the device and it explains how to get to the battery. Don't know about spare batteries, maybe someone else can help with that.
