Actually the word "tyre" has a strange history. We got the word from the US sometime in the early 20th century, and initially used the US spelling for it. Some time later a British company started manufacturing them and decided to start spelling it "tyre" for commercial reasons, and for some reason the changed spelling "stuck". It's a completely "bogus anglicization"!
