The correct response from the phone support should have been to direct you to the support portal http://www.adobe.com/support/digitaleditions (click on 'Submit a web case') as this is the only supported method (and you'll get people that actually understands the problems), unfortunately some times the phone support team tries to be helpful within their limits (and fails).
