Yes, her father is a hypochondriac. But he's also a gentleman -he has an income from land and doesn't work. i.e. he's rich.

Emma is certainly not necessarily likable at first. and she certainly gets her comeuppance from Mr Elton at the end of chapter 15 - which you should be getting near.

I like all Austen's novels, but they may be a little slow for you - the action is an action of words and manners, rather than of deeds.

I again urge my "David Balfour" on you. You should find action enough in that.
