Another vote for the Herriot books. My favourite is James Herriot's Dog Stories: Warm And Wonderful Stories About The Animals Herriot Loves Best - especially the story about "Cedric the Farting Boxer". The first time I read it I thought I was going to die laughing and crying. Here's a blog entry from another fan of Herriott that describes a visit to the Yorkshire Dales and a fiberglass cow exhibit that you can "insert your arm into the hoo-hoo to pull out/deliver the calf..." -- no kidding!
