I think males just make these up so they don't have to be seen reading romance. That would have to make them get into touch with an emotion that they are so good at ignoring in real life.
BTW - when I was in Russia a few years back - everyone on the trains was reading. And most of the readers had those brightly coloured paperbacks that indicate romance novels (you know those with the real pretty ladies and wellpackaged males)
