When the tab on my trifold cover broke (same kind of holder), I just removed the whole plastic spine thing and replaced it with a strip of adhesive velcro. One strip on the cover, one strip on the reader--just on the left side. It holds the reader very securely and is pretty much unbreakable. No reason that shouldn't work with the regular cover too. Of course, this means gluing a strip of velcro to your reader, but if you ever want to remove the residue, a product like goo-gone should clean it right up.
