I've only skimmed through your long post so I don't know if this relevant but I wanted to mention that several people have experienced greatly reduced battery life when they have used a nearly full SD card. I've had the latter problem and so don't usually use one any more except for special needs. Just a tidbit in case it's helpful to you.
