If it is indeed a hardware issue then I have little options. But I would hate to find out that there would be a software/config resolution on the PRS-300 after I shipped the unit.

Is the Russification still on it? If not, how did you flash it back (what firmware). If the Russification is still on it, I'm not sure what that will do to the warranty if you should choose to send it back to Sony.
You mention the unit being 4 months old. Were you using it OK for the last few months, and if so do you remember anything that may have triggered the problem (loading a book, pulling the USB early)?
