Because this is an embedded linux they modules or features are compiled into the system rather than "installed". That is why they do hardware checking to make sure you are not trying to put "lite" firmware on a original unit.

Are they doing this on a Commodore 64? (Or a Timex Sinclair ZX-81?)

Both are from 1982. And I owned both in 1982.
