I must be missing something here - most people seem to blame the Sony (Adobe) renderer or the EPub standard if a given EPub looks bad on a Sony.
I would say the primary obligation Sony has is to correctly render the EPub according to the EPub standard - and support standard CSS. Adjustable font size is important enough on these devices to be an exception.
If it is possible to produce a great looking EPub - blame the publisher of your book if it does not look great. LOTR comes to mind.
If it is not possible - then blame the Sony renderer. The EPub standard is really just packaging; all the pieces - like CSS - are from well tested Standards.
