I've just finished all 13 in the "Series of Unfortunate Events" by Lemony Snicket. What a ride! After the first four I was a bit downhearted, they seemed to be very samey and didn't move the plot along too much. However there was a dramatic improvement from No5 onwards.

I loved the final chapter which is quite different in tone from the preceding twelve volumes. It's much more melancholy and a little bit metaphysical. I'm sure a lot of it goes over the heads of the young people these books are meant for.

I'm now going to read the first two Parker novels by Richard Stark.
