Actually, early automobiles were called “horseless carriages” for good reason—they were based on horse-drawn carriages. Nonetheless, you raise a great point.
What is the ideal size? Certainly smaller than a newspaper, but one thing I like about the newspaper is the ability to see several of the main stories' headlines on the first page along with a paragraph or two and maybe a picture or two. This lets me quickly skim the days news and decide what I want to read first.
