Yes, there is such a thing as an anonymous authorization. If you haven't set up an Adobe ID and authorized your PC to that account, and you buy an ebook ADE (and/or Sony ebook library) creates an id for you using credentials created based on your specific PC. Any books you buy with this anonymous ID will only work on that single PC.

I'm pretty sure this is how Jim Lester from Adobe explained it in another thread when another user had the same problem.
