It really is high time for a general cut-down in fossil fuel useage.
One of the factors is global warming, the other is that the fossil-fuel supply is simply limited...and there won't be any resupply in the forseeable future...

Unfortunately there is very little there right now that could replace Oil and Gas right niw.
Hydrogen needs to be produced somehow (so you have the same problem, you just move it to another place) and things like wind and solar energy don't really produce a whole lot of energy in their current manifestations...

Maybe something like the "Orbo" technology created by Steorn might work, but since it's supposed to break the base laws of physics I'm not really buying it right now...
That leaves us with Nuclear Power which has its own and quite considerable drawbacks...
